Bus Dien Bien to Muang Khua

Dien Bien Phu Bus Station is located in the northern western Vietnamese town of Dien Bien which is 36.5 km from a border crossing to Laos and 453 km to the west of Hanoi. If you are travelling from Sapa to Luang Prabang you will need to change bus at Dien Bien Phu Bus Station for the second stage of the journey through to Luang Prabang.
There are many different types of service departing from this bus station, with every type of vehicle from large sleeper buses through to minivans operating out of the station. Services between major destinations in Vietnam (such as Hanoi and Sapa) and Dien Bien tend to use the larger buses which often travel overnight.

Travel from Dien Bien into Laos is typically in a micro-bus and journeys are always completed in the day time which means an early morning start from Dien Bien. Many of the roads in Laos, particularly near the border with Vietnam, are poor quality and larger vehicles can have difficulty negotiating sharp turns on narrow roads.

6. Bus ticket price: Depends on the destination you want to go to. Buy at the ticket counter in Dien Bien bus station.

1. Dien Bien - Muang Khua bus station

- Departure from Dien Bien bus station: 6.00 am - 6.45 am
- Arrive at Tay Trang border gate: 7.30 - 8.00 (Time at the border gate about 2 hours)
- Arrive at Muang Khua: 12.30pm


2. Dien Bien - Muang Xai bus station (Oudomxai)

- Departure from Dien Bien bus station: 6.00 am - 6.45 am
- Arrive at Tay Trang border gate: 7.30 - 8.00 (Time at the border gate about 2 hours)
- Arrive at Muang Xai (Oudomxai): 3.00pm – 3.30pm

4. Dien Bien - Luang Namtha bus station

- Departure from Dien Bien bus station: 6.00 am - 6.45 am
- Arrive at Tay Trang border gate: 7.30 - 8.00 (Time at the border gate about 2 hours)
- Arrive at Luang Namtha: 7.00pm – 7.30pm


5. Dien Bien - Luang Prabang bus station

- Departure from Dien Bien bus station: 6.00 am - 6.45 am
- Arrive at Tay Trang border gate: 7.30 - 8.00 (Time at the border gate about 2 hours)
- Arrive in Luang Prabang: 9.00pm – 9.30pm

 

C. LAOS VISA:

1. For nationalities that are not eligible for Laos Visa Free, you are required to have a Laos Visa. To get a Laos Visa, you need to go to the Laos embassy - Address 40 Quang Trung Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi. You should come over in the morning before 11.00am. You will receive your Laos Visa 3.00pm the same day. The Lao Embassy is closed Saturday and Sunday.

2. Tay Trang border gate does not issue Visa on arrival
2. On the way, the bus stops at Vietnamese/Laotian restaurants for guests to have dinner and lunch.
3. You can exchange money at Tay Trang border gate or buy a Lao Sim
4. There is no wifi on the mini bus.
